The Hiring Strategy Successful Leaders Follow Why do some leaders have an ability to surpass expectations and create something far bigger than themselves? Now THAT'S A Job Ad The above recruitment ad is credited to a 19th century explorer named Ernest Shackleton. Although debate still swirls around the authenticity of the quote and its origin, the legend tells of Shackleton posting this ad in the London Times sometime around 1912-1913. He needed men for his planned voyage across the Antarctic Circle to the South Pole. He got them, too. Thousands of men replied to the ad. Read on. What's the ROI of Service Award Programs? Dr. Trent Kaufman traveled the world trying to find an answer to the question: "What is the value of recognition programs that honor employees' years of service?" It's a question many of us want to know the answer to. Eleven countries and nearly a year of research later, three key findings were revealed. Read on. Is Your Criminal Screening Process Compliant? An employer's reluctance in hiring an applicant with a criminal history is understandable and sensible. Employers have an obligation to ensure a safe workplace, can be fined for failing to enact safeguards against workplace violence, and face liability for negligent hiring and retention of employees who commit violence in the workplace. Furthermore, a job applicant's honesty and judgment are relevant factors to consider in assessing an applicant's suitability for a job. For these reasons, employers frequently feel the need to inquire about an applicant's criminal conviction history and use criminal background checks when making hiring decisions. However, a recent increase in laws banning, or significantly limiting, an employer's ability to inquire about an applicant's criminal history, requires that all employers examine their current criminal background check policies and practices to ensure compliance with applicable laws. Read more ACA Update On May 8th, 2013 the Employee Benefits Security Administration issued a Technical Release to provide guidance on notifying employees of coverage options under Fair Labor Standards Act 18B as well as an updated model election notice under COBRA. If you have not read the release, I encourage you to do so in it's entirety here. Two key points takeaways are (1) The deadline to start notifying your current employees and each new employee of coverage options and the existence of a new Marketplace is October 1st, 2013. And (2) The DOL has created model notices for employers who offer a health plan to some or all employees and for employers who do not. Employers are free to distribute these notices in electronic or hard copy form. |
