Cleveland Attractions—How to Pull Top Candidates to Cleveland

It’s been almost 10 years since Drew Carey had us all singing “Cleveland Rocks! Cleveland Rocks!” and judging by its recent #2 spot on “10 Worst Places to Live in America” and #1 spot on the “Most Miserable US Cities” list,  job seekers aren’t exactly flocking to the Rock and Roll Capital of the World.

All the internet negativity surrounding the city can make it challenging for employers to bring in the top-notch candidates.  However, despite what critics say, the region offers world-class medical facilities, unsurpassed educational programs, professional sports entertainment, live music, and an array of water parks.  Here are just a few of Cleveland’s greatest selling points to help candidates see why Cleveland is a great place to live and work.

Museums
Cleveland is most notably known as the Rock and Roll Capital of the world.  This is in large part due to the $92 million dollar glass pyramid that houses the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.  Cleveland is one of rock’s most prominent birthplaces and the museum is crammed with artifacts ranging from Michael Jackson’s Thriller mask to John Lennon’s report cards.

Cleveland is also home to various other museums such as the Museum of Natural History that not only houses dinosaur skeleton, but has a zoo-like enclosure with bobcats and bald eagles.  If your potential hire has children, you’ll want to make sure they head over to the Great Lakes Science Center. This interactive museum features a bridge of fire, an indoor tornado, and hundreds of other hands-on exhibits. For the art aficionados, Cleveland’s Museum of Art houses a diverse permanent collection of more than 43,000 works of art from around the world.  The museum prides itself on remaining true to the vision of its founders, and keeps general admission free to the public.

Entertainment
It’s easy to convince job candidates that they’ll never have a hard time finding something to do in Cleveland.  Located just 45minutes from Downtown Cleveland, Cedar Point was recently name Best Amusement Park in the World and awarded a 2nd Golden Ticket Award for Best Steel Roller Coaster in the World (Millennium Force). If that’s not enough excitement for you, be sure to check out Pioneer Waterland and Geauga Lake’s WildWater Kingdom as well as a ballet or musical at Playhouse Square—the second largest performing arts center in the U.S.

Many shops and restaurants are housed in The Arcade, one of the original indoor shopping centers in the United States.  There may also be some truth to the Rock and Roll Capital claim to fame, since there are said to be more music venues in Cleveland than in Austin, Texas—which holds the title of the Live Music Capital of the World.

Sports
Sports fanatics will fit in seamlessly in Cleveland—the home to five professional sports teams.  Cleveland residents can enjoy a ballpark hotdog while watching the Cleveland Indians. Not a fan of the hot summer days? Stop by the ice rink for a Lake Erie Monsters ice hockey game. No matter which NFL team your potential hire cheers for, they can catch them playing the local favorite, Cleveland Browns. Cleveland is also home to the Pro Football Hall of Fame and has a National Women’s Football Association team that goes by the name of the Cleveland Fusion.  And don’t forget about the Cleveland Cavaliers. Stop out to Quicken Loans Arena and catch a game!

The Great Outdoors
For the candidate that likes spending their time outside, Cleveland is a great place to live and work.  Located directly on Lake Erie, Cleveland is home to boating, fishing, and beaches throughout the summer. Not a fan of the sun? Don’t worry! Located in the North East our changing of the seasons allows for tobogganing, skiing, snowboarding, and tubing.

A half-hour south of Cleveland sits the 33,000 acre Cuyahoga Valley National Park which includes 160 miles of trails, golf courses, spectacular rock formations, and waterfalls.  Another 20 miles of trails can be found in the gardens of the 3,600 acre Holden Aboretum, where sum of the cultivated varieties are 60 years old.  If the 500+ plants there aren’t enough, the Cleveland Botanical Garden is home to an 18,000 square foot glass conservatory that features both native and exotic plans.  Want to relax around a campfire with some friends? Vacation to the Lake Erie Islands.

Top Restaurants
Home to top award-winning chef, author, and television personality, Michael Symon, Cleveland is booming with restaurants for any occasion. Declared the Unofficial Mayor of Cleveland, Michael sat down with Food Network to discuss the top 5 “Must Eat” foods while in Cleveland.

  • Roasted Pig Head from The Greenhouse Tavern
