United Airlines Leaves Cleveland Leaving 470 without Jobs

Earlier this month, United Airlines met with The Plain Dealer and Northeast Ohio Media Group to explain their decisions to eliminate their hub at Cleveland Hopkins International Airport beginning in April.

Jim Compton, vice chairman and chief of revenue, said the airline took a long, careful look before deciding to de-hub but due to significant losses over the last 10 years, it’s essential that United makes the move.

“Cleveland does not have enough connecting traffic to justify keeping a hub here and has lost more money than any of United’s other hubs in the last three years,” Compton said.

This means that from April to June peak-day departures will reduce from 199 to 72 and peak-day seats from 12,384 to 6,121.  This will result in 470 job cuts at Hopkins among ramp worker, baggage handlers, customer service agents, and at Chelsea Food Service kitchens near Hopkins. The job reductions will begin in June and some employees will be offered transfers to other jobs at the airline. United did not yet have the details on this number.
