Cleveland Selected to Host the 2016 Republican National Convention

Republican National Committee Chairman, Reince Priebus, recently announced that the 2016 Presidential Nomination Convention will take place in Cleveland, OH.  Dates have not been finalized yet, but June 28 and July 18 are being considered.

Cleveland won the convention over Dallas, TX, which may have been thought to be the front runner as a wealthier, more conservative city.  But Cleveland was welcoming, offered great facilities and more flexibility on dates.

As a swing state, Ohio’s 18 electoral votes are in play every presidential election. A positive impression left by the republicans could win help to win votes.

According to Enid Mickelsen, the chairwoman of the RNC’s site selection committee, “Cleveland is a phenomenal city, and I can’t think of a better place to showcase our party and our nominee in 2016. Cleveland has demonstrated they have the commitment, energy, and terrific facilities to help us deliver a history-making Republican convention.”

The city has undergone a renaissance recently and the convention will give them a chance to show showcase the changing landscape. Cleveland has put billions of dollars into new downtown development including a recently opened 750,000-square-foot convention center close to Quicken Loans Arena, where the RNC convention is to take place.

As an example, the 2012 GOP convention brought 50,000 delegates, journalists, politicians and other guests and more than $200 million in revenue to the Tampa, FL economy and that was in the middle of a hurricane. Cleveland is hoping for even bigger results.
