Gaining an Edge With Diversity in the Workplace The makeup of America is evolving, and so is the way we work. Shifting demographic and immigration patterns have changed the composition of the U.S. population to include a much wider range of ethnicities, cultures, genders, ages, and abilities. In order to keep pace with changing market demands dictated by a diversified consumer base, employers must adopt business practices that acknowledge the value of workers from blended backgrounds when serving the needs of customers with the same interests and experiences. Measure the Success of Your HR Programs Any time you create a program, it’s necessary to measure the results. Even the incredibly informal “Let’s do it and see what happens” approach considers evaluation. But the measurement and evaluation portion of any program needs to be well thought out. Measure the wrong thing and the program can look like a failure (when it’s not) or vice versa. I’ve always been a fan of the Kirkpatrick Model. Created by Dr. Don Kirkpatrick in the 1950s, this model presents four levels for training evaluation: reaction, learning, behavior, and results. Read on.Harassment Investigations Question: Do we need to investigate rumors of harassment even if no one has made a complaint? Answer: Yes, I recommend you investigate. A company always has some inherent liability in relation to discriminatory or harassing comments or behavior. The level of liability usually correlates to the nature, severity, and context of the comments, the position of the employee who made them, and what the employer does or does not do about it. Read on.New FLSA Overtime Regulations Status Update For much of 2016, employers and HR professionals were focused on preparing for the new Fair Labor Standards Act white-collar overtime exemption regulations. The Department of Labor issued the final regulations on May 18, 2016, with an effective date of December 1, 2016. As you may remember, the new regulations more than doubled the minimum weekly salary requirement for most white-collar overtime exemptions from $455 to $913. The new regulations contained a number of additional provisions, the vast majority of which were not viewed favorably by employers. And then, right before Thanksgiving, everything came to a screeching halt. Read more. Where Do We Stand with Health Care? The American Heath Care Act was designed to provide health care reform and to replace former President Obama's Affordable Care Act (the "ACA").
